From Lawn to Flowers
MAPLE BAY, COWICHAN VALLEY
Mrs. Seymour had a patch of lawn that wouldn’t grow and was becoming an eye sore in her front yard. Since her main request was more flowers, this was a perfect opportunity to redesign the area into a pollinator palace.
Surrounding the house were mismatched garden beds but we had good bones to work from. Our plan involved duplicating plants, adding in some of her favourites, and tying it all together with a handful of precisely placed boulders.
This project has been a true collaboration with our client, guiding her vision to life. Each year the gardens evolve. In 2026 we will move into the side gardens removing some plants from crowded mass shrub plantings to add diversity and cohesiveness with more flowers.

By duplicating plants from other areas of the yard, we created a cohesive and unified design. After thinning out existing garden beds, we successfully transplanted grasses and perennials to fill the new layout.
Mrs. Seymour wanted to introduce annuals to provide season-long colour and support local pollinators. We chose Cosmos specifically because she had admired them in her neighbour’s garden.
The addition of select boulders breaks up the large space, adding dimension and visual interest that maintains structure even through the winter months. By moving away from rigid rows in favour of a layered layout, we achieved a softer, more cottage-inspired aesthetic.
